Digital Transformation is the process of integrating digital solutions into your organization, this often involves digitizing key paper processes to introduce efficiencies and greater accountability. The manner in which organizations pursue and achieve digital transformation has changed considerably over the last 10 years.
Digital transformation might include implementation of turnkey systems for accomplishing a specific business objective, turnkey systems with varying levels of configurability, low-code platforms (Platform as a Service) and custom systems. With more and more platform as a service providers offering solutions that enable citizen developers (i.e. business users) to rapidly create and deploy software, the need for clunky and expensive custom systems is declining.
Low-code platforms enable business users to become citizen developers who then design and configure software solutions with minimal assistance from a software developer. This bridges the historical gap between business user and software developer and enables the business user to become the developer. Empowering business users to configure a solution, test and validate their solution, and iteratively improve that solution results in faster product development life cycles. This process also results in solutions that better meet the original intentions of the project. Can I hear you say, “Time is money?”
Platform as a Service Providers are integrating and augmenting their products with varying levels of artificial intelligence. Most low-code platforms enable digital process automation through configurable workflow processes empowered by reactive AI which means that the system provides a predictable output based on the inputs it receives. This is the most basic level of artificial intelligence.
More and more low code platforms are starting to leverage the latest developments in generative artificial intelligence. Natural Language Processers (NLP) augment low-code platforms through a variety of methods including content generation (Generative AI), content analysis (NLP), predictive text and rapid, iterative development.
As an example, low-code platforms can leverage AI to create a web or mobile app using nothing more than natural language prompts into an interface driven by ChatGPT. Outsystems is a leading low-code platform who has published an initiative dubbed Project Morpheus to implement this capability. We’ll be writing a detailed review of the Outsystems platform for a future Insights blog post.
Microsoft Power Pages is another leading low-code platform that recently rolled out their AI chatbot to address user inquiries with generative AI, based on the data and security permissions within the site content. For example, your local Parks and Recreation Department might configure a reservation system in MS Power Pages and include a chatbot to respond to inquiries about an upcoming event based on the event information. The ability to provide real-time answers (that are both accurate and relevant) is sure to increase registrations while saving your Park and Rec staff valuable time.
While the impacts of artificial intelligence are debatable, one thing is for certain, it will change the way that we create software in the very near future. Matthew Berman’s video explains how a Product Manager, Business Analyst or other non-developer business user can leverage artificial intelligence to create software through rapid iterations and natural language prompts.
